Supply : Long Reins
Clay prefers to use long reins made from yacht braid. These 28-foot reins are a black & red braid with hand-sewn black leather rein buckles. The rope is washable in mild detergent; clean and oil the buckles as you would any leather tack.
$ 78, shipping is $15 for the first pair, $10 for additional pairs to the same address
![]() "The long reins need to be extensions of my hands, instantly relaying messages to my horse.
These reins are made of supple yacht braid. I prefer rope over flat webbing because it has more 'life' or 'feel' to it. (There is a place for flat webbing, but for most uses, I prefer rope.) If I want to move the rein from the horse's back to his hip, I roll my wrist, which sends a wave that smoothly repositions the rein without a lot of extra motion. I prefer a leather strap and buckle to attach the reins to the bit. I've used this setup for many years now and it makes a more natural contact which I like. It's also a lot safer than most snaps. A horse can reach back to scratch himself and… off pops the snap! I now use 28-foot reins on all horses, regardless of size." |
